Most of us have been fortunate enough to take a really great city break. And some of us may have had a few. City vacations give us a chance to sample the local culture and cuisine. But we’re never too far away from the comforts of the big international brands we’re familiar with.

Accommodation can range from luxury hotel to quaint bed and breakfast rooms. And the ease of public transport means we can venture deeper into the city to see plenty of attractions.

But there are times when you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. Sure, you might miss the vibrant nightlife. But you’ll be able to experience the beauty of the nation’s countryside. And you may even be able to meet some interesting local people.

If you want to get away from the cities, why not try some of these countries for a wonderful vacation in the countryside:



Finland is one of those countries that can be enjoyed all year round. There are stunningly beautiful lakes to enjoy a swim, a boat ride, or even a drink at the water’s edge.

And in winter, the crisp white snow glistens on the ground and in the branches of the trees. There is plenty to do in winter too. Enjoy a snow trek, or try out some cross-country skis.

Sweden is famed for its wilderness. The Swedish people love their natural environment. And much of the countryside is completely unspoiled and untouched.

Pine forests provide the most stunning photo opportunities, and great trekking or hiking terrain. No wonder it’s considered to be one of the most popular bucket list holidays.

The indigenous Sami people believe that Sweden provides the space to think. And there is plenty of it!

The terrain of Norway is perhaps the most dramatic you will find in Europe. The Norwegian Fjords are stunning to view, and make incredible landscape photographs. There are plenty of glaciers.

You can even find quaint coastal islands covered in rock. One of the most exciting ways to get around in the wilds of Norway is by snowmobile.

France is one of the largest European countries. And life in the cities can be quite vibrant and fun. But deep in the countryside, life is much slower, much quieter and much more French!

You can find hundreds of miles of vineyards. Wines are categorized by the region the grape was grown in. You can even tour the Champagne region to sample a glass of the real thing.

Cycling is a great way to get around the countryside of France. You could stay in a beautiful Chateau and eat some of the most wonderful home-cooked dishes.


Europe is an amazing place. It is rich in culture, and dynamic too. There are many places to see, and some incredible cities to enjoy.

But the gems within this continent certainly lie in the stunning landscapes and amazing beauty of the countryside. Opt for the quieter life, and live a little in one of these top European destinations.
